Exploring the Digital Canvas: A Journey from Fauve Colors to iPad Art

Digital painting os a yellow tree set in front of a purple sky.

The Defining Tree

Many artists are embracing the world of digital art, finding Wacom tablets and iPads to be powerful tools for creating visually stunning pieces with compelling aesthetics and concepts.

In my case, I come from a background in traditional art, complemented by years of experience in graphic design and website development using software tools. My exploration into the digital realm began during my Graduate thesis for my MFA. In this research, I proposed that the vibrant and bold colors used by Fauve artists over a century ago could find resonance with today’s audience.

The Fauvists were known for employing bright colors with high saturation, and I theorized that the contemporary shift in the perception of color is influenced by our exposure to screens, from TVs and monitors to smartphones. This transition represents a move from the traditional subtractive color model in art to the additive color model prevalent in digital displays.

My latest artworks, created using an iPad with Procreate, mark a full circle from my Graduate school days. I now produce paintings based on the additive color model, employing a subtractive color delivery method through prints to share my creations with a broader audience.

Defining Tree: One of my initial forays into digital art, this piece signifies a convergence of my artistic journey. You can explore and purchase this artwork in various formats here.

Benefits of Exploring Digital Art:

  • Versatility: Wacom tablets and iPads offer a versatile canvas for artistic expression.
  • Color Evolution: Explore the paradigm shift from subtractive to additive color models in contemporary art.
  • Accessibility: Digital art allows for easy sharing and reproduction through various mediums.
