Music, Emotion, and the Moment of Transformation
Catalyst is an ongoing series of expressive paintings exploring music, energy, rhythm, and transformation through the human figure, musical instruments, and the visual language of movement.
Rather than illustrating music literally, the series examines the inner state that music awakens. A song can shift memory, alter mood, intensify longing, create stillness, or open a doorway into another emotional world. In these paintings, the figure becomes both listener and vessel, shaped by color, rhythm, atmosphere, and sound.
The series began from a simple question:
What happens visually when music becomes the catalyst for transformation?
Series Statement
In Catalyst, music is not background. It is the force that changes everything.
Each painting begins with atmosphere, color, and movement before the figure fully emerges. The backgrounds are not passive spaces. They act as emotional fields, carrying the pulse, tension, and resonance of the unseen music. Figures appear within these environments as if they are being formed, dissolved, or altered by the sound around them.
Some works suggest meditation or quiet introspection. Others may feel energized, fragmented, dreamlike, or ecstatic. Together, they explore the intimate relationship between sound and self: the way a melody can become memory, the way rhythm can become movement, the way a private listening experience can feel almost spiritual.
This series continues my long-standing interest in transformation. In earlier bodies of work, especially Synthesis: States of Becoming, I explored the merging of the human figure with nature. In Catalyst, the transformation is more internal. The figure is not becoming landscape or element, but is instead being changed by emotion, music, and perception.
The paintings are intentionally loose, expressive, and atmospheric. I am interested in the moment before everything becomes fully defined, when color, form, and feeling still have room to breathe. The figures are present, but not always fixed. They may emerge from shadow, dissolve into painterly energy, or become partially absorbed by the surrounding space.
For me, this reflects the experience of listening deeply. Music can make us feel more ourselves while also carrying us somewhere unfamiliar. It can reveal hidden emotions, quiet the mind, or intensify the present moment. Catalyst is my attempt to give visual form to that invisible exchange.

Artistic Direction
The paintings in Catalyst are built through a conversation between abstraction and figuration. I often begin with color fields, broken marks, and intuitive movement, allowing the emotional tone of the painting to develop before resolving the figure. This approach lets the subject feel integrated into the atmosphere rather than placed on top of it.
Color plays a central role. Cool violets, blues, greens, and deep shadows often suggest introspection, while brighter passages act like moments of sound breaking through silence. Edges may shift between sharp architectural forms and loose painterly passages, creating tension between structure and sensation.
The result is a body of work that feels both personal and open-ended. The paintings are rooted in my own relationship to music, memory, and emotional experience, but they are designed to invite viewers into their own associations.

Dancer
Dancer explores movement as both a physical gesture and an emotional state. The figure stretches across a layered field of blue and turquoise, while vivid passages of magenta, red, pink, and violet animate the flowing dress. Loose brushwork and shifting areas of abstraction allow the body to merge with the surrounding atmosphere, emphasizing rhythm, energy, and sensation over a fixed moment in time. As part of the Catalyst series, the painting reflects an interest in the ways movement can transform both figure and space.
Conductor
Conductor explores the point where movement, sound, and intention converge. Viewed from behind, the conductor becomes a commanding focal point, his raised arms and baton directing a surrounding field of musicians, color, and rhythmic motion. Rather than describing the orchestra literally, the painting uses expressive brushwork and shifting passages of saturated color to suggest music as a physical force. As part of the Catalyst series, Conductor reflects the series’ broader interest in energy, vibration, transformation, and the ways human gesture can organize emotion into rhythm.
She Becomes the Song
She Becomes the Song captures the moment when performance shifts into complete immersion. The singer emerges through vivid passages of orange, red, blue, green, and violet, while energetic brushwork and layered forms dissolve the surrounding space into rhythm and atmosphere. The microphone anchors the figure, but the painting is less about the act of singing than the sensation of becoming absorbed in sound. As part of the Catalyst series, the work explores the point where voice, emotion, movement, and creative energy become inseparable.
Resonance
Resonance transforms the force of a taiko performance into a field of sound, memory, and ritual. The drummer’s strike becomes more than percussion: it releases waves of energy that move through the architecture, the body, and the surrounding air. Ceremony, incense, rhythm, and vision begin to merge, creating an atmosphere in which sound is not only heard but physically and spiritually felt. The painting captures the moment when music crosses into transcendence, leaving its vibration suspended between the visible world and something more mysterious.
Sutra of the Heart
Sutra of the Heart explores voice as a form of release, connection, and transformation. The figure emerges through saturated passages of red, blue, pink, green, orange, and gold, while fragments of musical notation become part of the painted surface. Layered collage, gestural brushwork, and shifting abstraction merge the figure with sound and atmosphere, turning the act of singing into something both physical and transcendent. As part of the Catalyst series, the painting reflects an interest in rhythm, vibration, and the ways creative expression can transform emotion into energy.
Soldier’s Choice
Soldier’s Choice examines the tension between conflict and creation through the unexpected pairing of a soldier and a guitar. The kneeling figure occupies a pose associated with combat, yet the instrument redirects the image toward music, expression, and personal agency. Energetic passages of green, blue, orange, and yellow dissolve parts of the figure into the surrounding space, reinforcing a sense of instability and transformation. As part of the Catalyst series, the painting considers how human energy can be directed toward destruction or toward acts of creativity and connection.
We Could Be Guitar Heroes
We Can Be Guitar Heroes expands the Catalyst series into a more collective expression of musical identity. A group of brightly colored guitars fills the composition, each instrument carrying its own personality while contributing to a larger visual rhythm. The painting reflects on the idea of creative possibility—how music can transform ordinary objects into symbols of aspiration, expression, and personal mythology. Through vivid color and energetic brushwork, the work captures the sense that each guitar is waiting for the moment when potential becomes sound.
Musical Inertia
Musical Inertia extends the Catalyst series into a broader orchestration of sound, energy, and suspended motion. Bringing together guitars, brass, strings, and percussion, the painting captures a moment of charged stillness—an ensemble at rest, yet filled with the potential for activation. Through layered color, overlapping forms, and expressive brushwork, the work explores the tension between silence and sound, suggesting the creative energy that gathers just before music begins.

Ignition Keys
Ignition Keys captures the charged moment just before music begins. The title plays on the idea of keys as both musical elements and instruments of activation—something that can unlock, start, or transform.
